About this book

A mountain behind his family's new house makes unpacking seem unbearable to David. He has never climbed one, and its slopes promise discoveries hidden from the valley below. When he finally gets permission to explore, terraces, aspens and rocky ledges keep changing the view. Edward Ormondroyd's 1957 children's fantasy begins with this close attention to a boy's curiosity before bringing him into the company of a mythical bird.

David and the Phoenix mixes outdoor adventure with the comic behavior of creatures who can talk. In the beach episode, a Sea Monster guides the pair to buried treasure while the Phoenix tries to sound like an experienced sailor, despite a recent bout of seasickness. David's eager digging and the bird's proud claims give the scene its humor.
