About this book
The title says the logic is deductive and inductive, with special application to the science and art of teaching. The book says that the grammarian divides sentences into five kinds, namely declarative, interrogative, imperative, optative and exclamatory, but that logic recognizes only the declarative.
General truths, which carry no quantity sign, might be classed as indefinite propositions, and the illustrations given include “Things equal to the same thing are equal to each other” and “A stitch in time saves nine”. The book says that analogy by example gives generalizations of much greater certitude than analogy by one or two marks of resemblance. On definitions, the book says that if the definition does not include all the species, it is too narrow, and if it includes other species of the genus it is too broad, with the example that a trigon is a polygon of three angles.
