About this book
The analysis distinguishes connotative words, which denote a subject and imply an attribute, from non-connotative words, which signify a subject only or an attribute only. The discussion treats proper names as distinguishing marks whose continued use does not depend on remembering the reason for their original assignment. The account locates the meaning of names that have meaning in what those names connote rather than what they denote.
The treatment of progressive effects describes uniform succession between a cause and its effect and between successive stages of the effect. The text defines empirical laws as derivative laws whose derivation is unknown. The discussion of social science calls for combining the laws of all the causes on which an effect depends.
