The Banner Boy Scouts on a Tour, or The Mystery of Rattlesnake Mountain, is by George A. Warren. In one scene the boys of Stanhope troop come together in a basement room. Paul leads the Red Fox patrol, his chum Jack stands beside him, and the three patrols are called Red, Gray and Black Fox. A silk banner sewn with a fox's head stands in a corner, a prize offered by an old Quaker named Mr. Westervelt. The scouts have come to hear where they will spend their vacation.
The contents include chapters titled "The Mystery of the Tin Box", "Getting Ready for the Great Hike", "The Coming of the Circus Caravan", "A Camp by the Roadside" and "At the Foot of Rattlesnake Mountain". In one passage a character who has long wanted to learn whether the strange stories about grim old Rattlesnake Mountain are true looks up at the mountain. In another, Jack calls out to Paul in a cavern lit by lanterns.
