About this book
T. W. Doane's book is described on its title page as a comparison of Old and New Testament myths and miracles with those of nations of antiquity, considering also their origin and meaning. This is the seventh edition, with illustrations, and it carries the motto 'He who knows only one religion knows none.'
In one passage a legend of the Creation from the Tahitians is set beside the Hebrew one, and the prose Edda of the Scandinavians is cited on a golden age ended by a woman from Jotunheim. Another describes a Mexican picture of the first woman with a great serpent. A later passage deals with the Lamb as a symbol of Christ and the decision of a council held in the year 707 that a man on a cross should replace it. Bracketed note numbers mark references to sources.
