About this book
Devereux is a book by Edward Bulwer-Lytton. The contents list an advertisement to the present edition, the autobiographer’s introduction, and a note to the present edition (1852), as well as chapters grouped under Book I and Book II, among others.
The speaker describes a deadly and irreconcilable feud with a brother named Gerald, who was much stouter, taller, and stronger than the speaker. The speaker claims a spirit of frankness which no fear could tame. A character named Desmarais bares his breast to a magistrate and asks whether a man of his youth would suffer such a scar as that, if he could help it. A passage says the sickly are almost of necessity selfish.
