About this book
Doctor Marigold begins with a narrator who says, I am a Cheap Jack, and my own father's name was Willum Marigold. The narrator says he was born on the Queen's highway, but it was the King's at that time.
The narrator says that whenever the cloth was laid for dinner his father began rattling the plates and dishes, as people in the narrator's line do when they put up crockery for a bid, only he had lost the trick of it. The narrator speaks confidentially to Mim, saying she lies heavy on Mim's own hands and asking what he will take for her, and Mim's reply was a pair of braces. The narrator explains to Sophy that he should keep the Library Cart as his living-cart when not upon the road, and keep all her books for her just as they stood, till she come back to claim them.
