About this book

A music teacher's household becomes the meeting point of private affection and court power in Friedrich Schiller's five-act tragedy. Louisa Miller loves Ferdinand, an army major whose father is the president at a German prince's court. Her father fears the consequences of a relationship across such a sharp difference in rank, while her mother welcomes the prospect of social advancement. The president's secretary, Worm, also seeks Louisa's hand.

The tension grows through arguments, threats and schemes that reach into the Miller family's home. Ferdinand proposes leaving with Louisa, but she weighs his promises against her duty to her father. An English translation of a German domestic drama, Love and Intrigue gives readers forceful dialogue and a close view of how authority enters family decisions. Its competing claims of love, conscience and obedience make the characters' choices the centre of the action.

Friedrich Schiller

Friedrich Schiller (1759-1805) was a German poet, playwright, and historian, and with Goethe a founder of Weimar classicism. His dramas of freedom and moral struggle, and his Ode to Joy set to music by Beethoven, made him one of the most beloved writers in the German language.
