About this book

The text carries the heading BOOK III. CONSPIRACY OF THE NOBLES 1565. The text says that up to this point the general peace had, it appears, been the sincere wish of the Prince of Orange, the Counts Egmont and Horn, and their friends. The text says that the nuptials of Baron Montigny, one of the Belgian nobles, and those of the Prince Alexander of Parma, which took place about this time in Brussels, assembled a great number of the Belgian nobles in that town.

The privy council maintained that it would be presumptuous to take a step so important and so contrary to the declared sentiments of the monarch without having first obtained his sanction, and opposed the vote of the Prince of Orange. The text says that the conduct of the Belgian nobles was examined by Spanish eyes, and that what had been the offspring of the moment was made out to be a well-matured and far-sighted plan.
