About this book
Doorways in Drumorty gathers six stories: The Corp', Silk Both Sides, The Sinning of Jessie MacLean, Wantin' a Hand, The Tattie-Doolie and The Courtin' of Sally Ann. The author dedicates the book to her father as her first. The characters speak in Scots.
In The Corp', old Kirsty leaves her door open a few inches and watches Mistress MacNab's house, fearing that Mistress MacNab's anger over the butter prize may keep her from being asked in to see the corpse. Her son Tammas whistles, says the long grace and asks whether she would like to drive with him to Skilly's to borrow a rake. In another passage, a woman's nickname for the new tailor pleases old Perney, his rival. In a third, a man called the Gype ponders Sally Ann's silence and recalls his mother's saying that a worthy bride is not easily won.
