About this book
At Castle Affey in the west of Ireland, a baronet's marriage to his cook upsets the local social order. Bridie Malone becomes Lady Corless, fills the household with her relatives and manages the house, garden and farm with practical authority. A newspaper report about payments for people out of work then catches her attention, bringing government policy into the daily business of feeding her husband and keeping the estate running.
George A. Birmingham's collection of Irish short stories follows the friction between private lives and public affairs. Alongside the title story's comedy of class and family, the stories introduce Denis Ryan and Mary Drennan, young lovers whose hopes of marriage meet opposing political loyalties and the pressure of an important meeting. Readers interested in Irish social life can find both household absurdities and the anxiety that political divisions bring into ordinary relationships.
