About this book

Down-adown-derry is A Book of Fairy Poems by Walter de la Mare, with illustrations by Dorothy P. Lathrop. The contents list groups the poems under Fairies and Witches and Witchcraft, with titles such as The Double, The Three Beggars, I Saw Three Witches and Sunk Lyonesse.

In one poem a speaker curtseys to the dovecote and to the well, and twirls round and round about to smell the morning sweets. Another poem describes a company of elf-folk with faces strangely fair and a bind of green-grasses in their hair. A poem headed Sleeping Beauty says that the scent of bramble fills the air, and that she lies amid her folded sheets, the gold of evening in her hair, the blue of morn shut in her eyes. A woodman, with a faggot on his back, tells the speaker to seek not the face of Pan to see, and to flee from his clear note summoning thee to darkness deep and black.
