About this book

The title page of Henry Brocken, by Walter de la Mare, announces his travels and adventures in the rich, strange, scarce-imaginable regions of romance. The contents list names, among others, Whither?, Lucy Gray and Jane Eyre, each followed by quoted lines. A narrator says that in a cold, bright chamber, one snowy twilight, there first suddenly awoke in him an imperative desire for distant lands.

The narrator says that it was on a blue March morning, with all the trees of his aunt's woods in a pale-green tumult of wind, that he set out, quite unwittingly, on a journey that has not yet come to an end. The narrator is sure that somewhere yet Imogen's mountains lift their chill summits into heaven, over haunted sea-sands Ariel flits, and at his webbed casement next the stars Faust covets youth, till the last trump shall ring him out of dream. The narrator rests in a ruinous hut, refreshing himself with the unripe berries that grew near by, and says that fate leads a man through danger to his delight.
