About this book

Foot-prints of Travel; or, Journeyings in Many Lands is by Maturin M. Ballou. The preface says that in these notes of foreign travel the object has been to cover a broad field without making a cumbersome volume, and that conciseness has necessarily been observed. One passage describes a tree in the Mariposa Grove of Big Trees, partially decayed towards its base yet still alive and standing upright, with a passage-way through its entire trunk large enough for a stage laden with passengers to drive through.

The text says the harbor of Genoa is semicircular in form, nearly a mile across, and protected by two substantial piers, on one of which is a lighthouse three hundred feet in height. A passage describes fresh water obtained from springs beneath the sea, brought to the surface by employing divers who descend with leather bags.
