About this book

Pearls of Thought is by Maturin M. Ballou, and its dedication says the volume is affectionately dedicated by the compiler. The book is made of short passages, each followed by a writer's name, such as Byron on the first kiss of love.

The book lists subjects such as Amusement, Ancestry and Twilight, each followed by a short passage. A passage says that amusement is the waking sleep of labor, and that when it absorbs thought, patience, and strength that might have been seriously employed, it loses its distinctive character. A passage on analogy says that analogy, although it is not infallible, is yet that telescope of the mind by which it is marvelously assisted in the discovery of both physical and moral truth. Passages on love and truth include one saying that stolen kisses are always sweetest and another that falsehood always avenges itself.
