About this book

Seven wolf cubs take their first uncertain steps outside a hidden den in Carboona, watched by a mother alert to every unfamiliar scent. Olaf Baker opens his animal adventure among thorn trees, junipers and spruce woods, where the smallest change in a trail can signal danger. The cubs' tumbles and discoveries give the opening a playful warmth, while their mother's search for a safer home introduces the risks of the wilderness.

The story also follows the boy Dusty Star and his wolf, Kiopo. A later episode finds Dusty Star held captive in a camp, where the older woman Kitsomax feels compassion for him and hopes for a chance to help. Reports of a huge grizzly spread alarm and disrupt preparations for a festival. Readers drawn to animal stories will find close observations of wild creatures alongside a boy's adventure, with camp traditions and beliefs shaping people's responses to the forest around them.
