About this book

Each Man Kills, by Victoria Glad, carries the line "to live you must feed on the living". The narrator looks at Maria's picture on his desk and recalls that six months before he sat at the same desk, looking at her picture and wondering what could have happened to her. Six weeks had passed with no word from Maria, who had promised to write as soon as she arrived in Europe.

The narrator boards a plane bound for the Continent and, within two hours after landing, finds Maria at a little inn in Transylvania, and also finds Tod Hunter. Maria asks Bill why he could not leave her alone, and says she came there so she could think this out. Father Kalman circles a box several times, ringing his small bell, and at one point lays a crucifix upon each of their chests.
