About this book

The Golgotha Dancers by Manly Wade Wellman is introduced as a curious and terrifying story about an artist who sold his soul that he might paint a living picture. The narrator says he had come to the Art Museum to see the special show of Goya prints, but that gallery was so crowded that he walked out again. The narrator finds that The Isle of the Dead is not in its accustomed position on the wall, and that a gilt-framed painting he had never seen or heard of hangs in that space.

The front of the picture is filled with lively dancing creatures, twelve of them ranged in a half-circle around a prone cross. The narrator says he screamed like any wild thing caught in a trap, rolled out of bed and to his feet, shook off one of the beings and dashed the other against the bureau. A character named Miss Dolby kept tearing and stabbing at the canvas, and the narrator says there were only two dancers left, then one, then none.
