About this book
Elements of Structural and Systematic Botany is presented in its preface as an introduction to botany rather than a complete treatise of the whole science. A description of a cell without a cell wall identifies a mass of protoplasm containing a nucleus and cavities filled with cell sap. The account describes other cells with vibrating, thread-like processes of protoplasm that propel the cell through water.
The explanation of withering attributes the condition to partial collapse of cells following loss of water when the water supply is cut off. The discussion of growth explains that new cells remaining together produce tissues, from which the various organs of higher plants are built.
