About this book
The title page presents an essay on the theory of the earth with geological illustrations, translated from the last French edition and containing numerous additions. The discussion of fossil organic remains describes relics of a vanished primeval world and connects their consideration with piety, devotion and the instability of earthly affairs. The explanation of stalactites describes waters dissolving calcareous substances through superabundant carbonic acid, followed by crystallisation when the acid evaporates.
The account of Seeland identifies a promontory on the side called Hedding that consists of strata of chalk containing flints. The description of Bornholm identifies the island as the easternmost of those belonging to Denmark and records coal strata covered by sandstone. The discussion of a small zodiac notes two winged Rams among its accessory figures, one between the Bull and the Twins and another between the Scorpion and Sagittary.
