About this book
Essays on Early Ornithology and Kindred Subjects is by James Roxburgh McClymont, with three plates. The contents list, among others, The Rukh of Marco Polo, The Banda Islands and the Bandan Birds, and The Etymology of the Name Emu.
The essay headed The Rukh of Marco Polo says that Marco Polo added to his narrative a number of on-dit more or less marvellous in character, collected principally from mariners and from other travellers. The essay on the etymology of the name Emu says the name has an interesting history and occurs in the forms emia and eme in Purchas his Pilgrimage, in 1613. The book also mentions ducks and teals in abundance on the lakes, and a poule bleue similar to the poules bleues of Madagascar, India, and China, doubtless the Swamp Hen or Purple Gallinule.
