About this book

Catholic faith supplies Hilaire Belloc with the organizing principle for his account of European history. Published in 1920, the book argues for a close identity between the Church and European civilization. Its chapters move from the Roman Empire and the Church within it to the emergence of nations, the Middle Ages and the Reformation. Belloc also turns to the Great War, seeking its explanation in the historical development of Catholic Europe.

Britain occupies an important place in this argument. Belloc challenges theories of Northern German origins and locates Britain's separation from Catholic Europe in the religious changes of the sixteenth century. His discussion of gaps in the early British record connects disputed evidence with wider claims about national identity. Readers studying religious interpretations of history can examine how he builds a case for continuity across changing political institutions and for the authority of a shared European past.
