About this book
My Knitting Book, by Miss Lambert, says in its preface that the examples of knitting have been selected with the greatest care, many are original, and the whole are so arranged as to render them comprehensible even to a novice in the art. The preface says knitting is so often sought, as an evening amusement, both by the aged and by invalids, that a large and distinct type has been adopted. A list of terms used in knitting defines to cast on as the first interlacement of the cotton on the needle, and to narrow as lessening by knitting two stitches together.
One pattern is written round by round, and its fifth round reads: knit two; bring the silk forward, knit two together; knit one; bring the silk forward, knit two together; pearl six, repeat. On fastening on, the book says the best way is to place the two ends contrariwise, and knit a few stitches with both together, and that for knitting with silk or fine cotton a weaver's knot will be found the best.
