The Book of Ecclesiastes, by Samuel Cox, is part of The Expositor's Bible, edited by the Rev. W. Robertson Nicoll, and comes with a new translation. The preface says the lectures on which the book is founded were delivered five-and-twenty years ago and were published in A.D. 1867. The preface says that for more than twenty years the book has been out of print, a large first edition having been speedily sold out.

The text says the whole social state described in the Book is utterly unlike what we know to have been the condition of the Hebrews during the reign of Solomon, but exactly accords with the condition of the captive Israelites. The text says the questions now asked and answered are, in effect, first whether Wealth will confer the good, the tranquil and enduring satisfaction which men seek, and second a question about that moderate provision for the present and for the future to which the more prudent restrict their aim. The text says the conclusion of the whole matter is that we fear God and keep his commandments.
