About this book
Fairies and Fusiliers is a volume of poems by Robert Graves, dated 1918 and dedicated to the Royal Welch Fusiliers. Its contents list gives each poem its own title, among them An Old Twenty-Third Man, To Lucasta on Going to the War, A Pinch of Salt, The Next War and I'd Love to Be a Fairy's Child.
In An Old Twenty-Third Man, a red-faced centurion named Strabo and a man called Gracchus talk over their wine about the Legion. Another poem turns a bath into a sea: the speaker's knees are an island, his hands are boats, and the soap slides around like a shark. A further poem offers cherries picked at night, with a fairy piper and the refrain Merry, merry, take a cherry.
