About this book

Farina, by George Meredith, includes a section headed The White Rose Club. A prosperous Rhinelander named Gottlieb Groschen, or, as it was sometimes ennobled, Gottlieb von Groschen, has vine-hills, corn-acres below Cologne and mineral-springs in Nassau among his possessions.

The White Rose chief asks whether he may speak with Mistress Margarita, Margarita answers that Dietrich should speak, and he continues by asking whether it is to be alone. Dietrich informs Farina that the Club would wring satisfaction out of him for the insult. The Thier gives safe-conduct to the prison where Farina was confined, and Frau Farina says it is her son she visits there. Gottlieb Groschen, hastening to the camp, is met on the road, and dismay rumples the old merchant's honest jowl.

George Meredith

George Meredith was an English novelist and poet of the Victorian era. At first, his focus was poetry, influenced by John Keats among others, but Meredith gradually established a reputation as a novelist. The Ordeal of Richard Feverel (1859) briefly scandalised Victorian literary circles.
