About this book
Father Damien is an open letter to the Reverend Doctor Hyde of Honolulu from Robert Louis Stevenson. The writer tells the man addressed that his letter to the Reverend H. B. Gage would absolve the writer from the bonds of gratitude, even if the man had filled the writer with bread when he was starving.
A letter that the writer quotes, in answer to inquiries about Father Damien, says "he was a coarse, dirty man, headstrong and bigoted." The writer says that doctors and nurses "go for a time to their high calling" and can look forward to relief, to recreation, and to rest, while Damien "shut-to with his own hand the doors of his own sepulchre." The writer says he will extract three passages from his diary at Kalawao, and one diary passage reads "Damien is dead and already somewhat ungratefully remembered in the field of his labours and sufferings."
