About this book
Fetichism in West Africa presents observations of customs and superstitions by a missionary who served in the Gabun district of Kongo-Française. The account of marriage describes dowry claims made by a woman's relatives and says her family may take her back if she is maltreated, returning the dowry. The account says a widow belongs to her husband's family and sometimes gets goods as a favor, without inheritance by right.
The discussion of pregnancy records food restrictions binding both the woman and her husband, including a prohibition on eating flesh from an animal pregnant when slaughtered. The text reports a belief that a carpenter's driving a nail during his wife's pregnancy would cause difficult labor, while allowing his other work.
