About this book
Samoa, A Hundred Years Ago And Long Before is by George Turner, first printed in London in 1884. The contents list chapters on clothing, amusements, mortality and diseases, death and burial, houses, canoes, government and laws, and wars. A tradition says the land was at one time flooded by the sea, and everything died except some fowls and pigeons, and that a vessel rested on the top of the mountain called Malata.
The text says influenza is a new disease to the natives, who say the first attack ever known in Samoa was during the Aana war in 1830, and that the natives traced it to the foreigners and the new religion. The name Lavasii, or Cloth-lifted-up, became a title of chief ruler, and that title has remained in that particular family to this day.
