About this book
Fifty Notable Years offers views of the ministry of Christian Universalism during the last half-century, with biographical sketches, by John G. Adams. The opening page quotes Thomas Whittemore, D. D., as saying that Universalism was the evening star of the church as the night of the dark ages came on, and appeared as the morning star at the dawn of the Reformation.
The text says that Origen, who so ably and successfully maintained the claims of Christianity against the abusive attacks of the heathen Celsus, was a Universalist. A life story in the book says that a man accepted the position of chaplain in the Third Maine Infantry and was publicly pronounced by Gen. Howard the most faithful chaplain he ever saw. The text asks whether there is any instance of sinfulness that cannot be reached by that grace which so much more abounds than any transgression of men.
