About this book
William Radcliffe, sometime of Balliol College, Oxford, is named as the author of Fishing from the Earliest Times, a book with illustrations whose title page is dated London, 1921. One illustration is captioned the fish-avatar of Vishnu, with scenes illustrating the life of Krishna, and another is captioned the oldest representation, but one, of angling, c. 1400 B.C.
One chapter is headed The Contest Between Homer and Hesiod. In another passage the author describes a test made in July 1918 with two companions, in which a gun was fired close to trout in a shallow burn to see whether the fish reacted, and he reports that they took no notice. A passage on the Jews cites the Talmud and the Sea of Tiberias, where fishing with hook and net was allowed. Notes mention fighting fish in Siam and Ebisu with a fishing rod.
