About this book
The preface questions the apparent worthlessness implied by waste places, saying that each region described has a definite relation to the rest of the world. The account describes a rat laying strips of spiny cactus across the passage leading into its retreat to deter snakes. The road-runner is described as omnivorous but living chiefly on reptiles and mollusks.
The written history of Iceland begins about 860 with a viking from the Faroe Islands driven far north of his homeward course from Norway. The account says that a sudden storm covered the ground with snow, prompting the traveller to name the country Snowland.
