About this book
Forty Centuries of Ink is credited to David Nunes Carvalho. The full title describes a chronological narrative concerning ink and its backgrounds, introducing incidental observations and deductions, parallels of time and color phenomena, bibliography, chemistry, poetical effusions, citations, anecdotes and curiosa. The preface says the unfortunate conditions surrounding the almost universal use of the oddly named commercial and with few exceptions record inks, and the so-called modern paper, are the motive for the writing of the book.
The text says Josephus asserts that the books of the ancient Hebrews were written in gold and silver. The text says antimony and galls were used by the Egyptian ladies to tint their eyes and lashes and, who knows, to write with. The text says the Greek word Phoenicia means literally the land of the purple dye, and that the invention of the art of writing is attributed to the Phoenicians.
