About this book

Fragments of Ancient Poetry is a book by James Macpherson. The contents list names, among others, an introduction by John J. Dunn, notes to the introduction and a preface. The text names John Home, famous on both sides of the Tweed as the author of Douglas, as the one who first encouraged Macpherson to undertake his translations. The text quotes Malcolm Laing, whose ardor in exposing Macpherson's imposture exceeded that of Dr. Johnson, as saying that he first read the poems in his early youth with an ardent credulity that remained unshaken for many years of his life.

A speaker addresses the unhappy daughter of Reynold, saying that her spouse shall return no more and that he is silent in the deep. A speaker labelled Morna tells Duchommar, son of Mugruch, "I love thee not", and addresses Cadmor the son of Tarman as the love of Morna.
