About this book
Gambara, by Honoré de Balzac, carries a dedication to Monsieur le Marquis de Belloy. The dedication speaks of that pilgrim seated at the gate of Paradise with ears to hear the songs of the angels but no longer a tongue to repeat them.
The text names Count Andrea, who was so unlucky as to be a poet, as someone who thought himself released from patriotic obligations. A description of music in the text says Kadijah announces to the populace the Prophet’s interviews with the Angel Gabriel, with the marking maestoso sostenuto in F Major. A speaker declares "henceforth I drink no more wine" and says "The abuse of good liquor last evening led me into much guilty folly".
