About this book
Juana by Honoré de Balzac, translated by Katharine Prescott Wormeley, carries a dedication To Madame la Comtesse Merlin. The contents list chapters headed Exposition, Auction and The History of Madame Diard.
A chapter headed Exposition says that Marechal Suchet, despite the discipline he had introduced into his army corps, was unable to prevent a short period of trouble and disorder at the taking of Tarragona. One speaker asks Perez how much dot he gives her, and the Spaniard replies that she has two hundred thousand gold piastres. Asked whom he has fought, a speaker replies Montefiore, and says that someone stole his whole fortune and that he took it back.
