About this book
In Gambler's World, by Keith Laumer, Retief pauses before a tall mirror to check the overlap of the four sets of lapels that ornament the vermilion cutaway of a First Secretary and Consul. Magnan tells Retief to come along, saying the Ambassador has a word to say to the staff before they go in.
A bearer with a tray of drinks fumbles the tray and sends a glass crashing to the floor. Retief says he dropped his glass and that Mr. Magnan is upset because he hates to see liquor wasted. Bullet-head plucks a knife with a lightning motion and says that will be five hundred credits for the equipment and that nobody calls Kippy a cheat. Retief says he wants a hundred credits, now.
