About this book
Gardening Indoors and Under Glass is subtitled A Practical Guide to the Planting, Care and Propagation of House Plants, and to the Construction and Management of Hotbed, Coldframe and Small Greenhouse. F. F. Rockwell, author of Home Vegetable Gardening, published it in September 1912. The foreword speaks of the greenery, colour and fragrance that blossoming plants bring to rooms in winter.
One passage on window gardens says plants need sunshine and should be turned half about every few days, preferably at watering. Flowering plants such as geraniums and heliotropes need more light than palms, ferns and decorative-leaved begonias. Plants may be kept in pots and shallow pans or grown together in a plant box. Another passage describes the lace fern, Asparagus plumosus nanus, and Asparagus Sprengeri, a trailing plant for stands or baskets. A third suggests growing lettuce in pots or on a bench in well rotted manure and sandy loam, with a first sowing about August first.
