About this book
Manual of Gardening (Second Edition) is by L. H. Bailey, dated 1910, and is subtitled A Practical Guide to the Making of Home Grounds and the Growing of Flowers, Fruits, and Vegetables for Home Use. The contents include Chapter I, The Point of View, and Chapter II, The General Plan or Theory of the Place, whose headings include flower-borders, the old-fashioned garden and a city lot.
In one passage the text names blackberry varieties and says Snyder and Taylor are most generally successful. Another passage separates sweet cherries from sour cherries and gives a planting distance of 18 by 18 ft. for sour cherries. A passage on protecting trees describes a stick secured to the tree by a staple, with a short chain at its lower end, so that a horse cannot reach the tree, and says mice and rabbits injure trees by gnawing. Another quotes the saying that the lily family has no poor relations.
