About this book

The Nursery-Book is presented as a complete guide to the multiplication and pollination of plants. The seed discussion explains that some seeds rarely germinate before the second year after maturity, even with the best treatment. The instructions recommend stratifying those slow-germinating seeds and keeping them until the second spring before sowing, rather than leaving beds occupied while waiting.

The treatment of hard seeds includes soaking and scalding as partial substitutes for stratification, while the instructions specifically advise against boiling seeds. The cherry instructions warn against allowing seeds to dry until the meat becomes hard and brittle. The definitions distinguish cross-fertilization between flowers of the same species from hybridizing, described as crossing between species.
