About this book

Edward Thomas begins with the difficulty of separating George Borrow's life from the image Borrow created in his books. This literary biography examines changes of name, translated ballads and childhood memories as clues to that process. Thomas considers Borrow's portrait of his friend Ambrose Smith as Jasper Petulengro, then studies a remembered riverside scene at Berwick to show how experiences from different periods enter the same passage.

Borrow's work distributing Bibles brings horses, church notices and a passport inspection into Thomas's discussion of his methods and manner. Thomas describes a traveller whose strong opinions meet an equally strong curiosity about other people. Earlier biographies, letters and a Welsh travel journal help support his account. For readers interested in autobiography, the book offers a close examination of the ways a distinctive personality takes shape on the page.
