About this book
The narrator, George Walker of Friday Street, London, says that of all the spots he has visited, Suez in Egypt, at the head of the Red Sea, is by far the vilest, the most unpleasant, and the least interesting. The text says there are no women, no water, and no vegetation, and that the place is surrounded, and indeed often filled, by a world of sand. The narrator says he looks back upon the week he spent there with a certain sort of triumph, though he is free to confess he is not a great man.
The text describes a ceremony during which not a word was spoken, and one man proceeded to fill two pipes, producing tobacco from an ornamented bag he carried round his neck. The narrator says a more wretched day than that he never spent in his life. The text asks what a man can do, in a strange country, when he is told that a native spits in his face by way of civility.
