About this book

Our Eternity, by Maurice Maeterlinck, includes a chapter called OUR INJUSTICE TO DEATH. The chapter quotes a saying that death and death alone is what we must consult about life, and not some vague future or survival, where we shall not be. A quoted speaker says there is no true duration save that between the cradle and the grave, and calls the rest mere bombast, show, delusion.

Doctors, on their side, say or might say that, in the present stage of science, two or three cases excepted, there is never a certainty of death. The text asks whether all the preceding eternity, which is of exactly the same value as that which follows, shall not count. The text also says that, for those who limit their anxiety to annihilation, the body disintegrates and can no longer suffer, and what comes is the great peace so often prayed for.
