About this book
Goethe and Schiller, an historical romance by L. Mühlbach, is translated from the German by Chapman Coleman. The contents list names chapters including The Trials of Life, Henrietta von Wolzogen and Charlotte von Kalb, among others. A character named Oswald says he will not return to Stuttgart, for the warrant of arrest would hang over his head, but will go to Carlsruhe, where he has an old uncle.
A character named Marie says she will sacrifice her own happiness for the listener's sake, but makes one condition: that all these little mysteries and intrigues be discontinued, and Schiller be told the whole truth. The text describes Goethe as the recognized poet, the man of rank, who had never known want or care, and Schiller as the man of humble standing, who was still wrestling with want and care.
