About this book

A magazine article turns Tom Swift's attention from an airship stabilizer to a buried city in the Copan valley of Honduras. Professor Bumper has deciphered old records describing a valuable gold idol, and Tom explains the discovery to his friend Ned Newton. Their exchange sets scholarly curiosity beside Ned's practical interest in money, giving the expedition its mixture of research, treasure hunting and friendly banter.

The 1917 adventure for younger readers carries that discussion into the jungle. In the middle excerpt, Tom, Ned, Mr. Damon and the professor shoulder their supplies after trouble with their guide. Heavy packs, difficult paths and an uncertain encounter in the undergrowth make the search a test of resourcefulness. Tom's electric rifle brings his inventive skills into the field.
