About this book
Group Psychology and The Analysis of The Ego is by Sigmund Freud, in an authorized translation by James Strachey. A translator's note says some passages were moved from the text to footnotes at the author's wish. The contents begin with an introduction, then Le Bon's description of the group mind, other accounts of collective mental life, suggestion and libido, and two artificial groups, the church and the army.
In one passage Freud quotes Le Bon on how people formed into a group come to feel, think and act differently from the way each would alone. He interrupts with remarks of his own, asking what bond unites the members. Another passage discusses suggestion and hypnosis and notes that some people yield to it while others resist. A passage near the close mentions war neuroses in the German army and a study by E. Simmel.
