About this book
Guide to Life and Literature of the Southwest, with a Few Observations is by J. Frank Dobie and, in an edition dated Dallas, 1952, is revised and enlarged in both knowledge and wisdom. The chapter list covers Pueblos and Navajos, Texas Rangers, Women Pioneers, Pioneer Doctors, Mountain Men and the Pony Express. The author writes that no sharp line of time or space can delimit the boundaries of any region to which any regionalist lays claim.
The text names intellectual integrity as a quality that any good regional writer has in common with other good writers of all places and times. One entry notes that B. M. Bower was a woman, Bower being the name of her first husband, and that her second was a Montana cowpuncher named Fiddle Back Sinclair. Another entry says that Eugene Manlove Rhodes died in 1934 and that his finest story is Paso Por Aqui, published in the volume entitled Once in the Saddle (1927).
