About this book
Gutta-Percha Willie is by George MacDonald, and the book lists eight black and white illustrations by Arthur Hughes. Among the chapters in the contents list are He Serves an Apprenticeship, He Goes to Learn a Trade and How Willie Learned to Read Before He Knew His Letters.
The text says Willie would sit listening intently, trying to understand what he heard, and that he learned there was a great deal of suffering in the world and that his father's business was to try to make it less. The text shows Willie, in whose eyes sixpence was a huge sum to ask from his father, looking for a way to make a machine wind more slowly and thinking of a small cogged wheel, a wheel with teeth, whose cogs fit into the cogs of a much larger wheel. A man says to Mr Willie that his shoemaking is nearly over, and that a cold is the worst thing for him, that is for his poor rickety body.
