About this book

A silk mill in a Derbyshire gorge gives Will Willows and his friend Josh Carlile a holiday playground of rocky ledges, trout pools and rushing water. Will lives at the mill, while Josh is the vicar's son. Their opening conversation turns a sleeping landscape painter into the possible target of a prank. Around the boys, George Manville Fenn builds a detailed picture of Beldale, from its mossy stonework to the waterwheel that powers the looms.

This adventure for younger readers also follows tensions within the small community. The artist Manners tries to reason with James Drinkwater, who has quarrelled with his employer and speaks bitterly of revenge. A swollen stream brings another source of anxiety as debris sweeps through the valley. Humorous exchanges, outdoor pursuits and threats to the mill give the story its changing pace, while the close attention to water and landscape makes the setting central to the action.
