About this book
The Constable De Bourbon is by William Harrison Ainsworth. The contents list names, among others, Book I, The Affront, with chapters including Fontainebleau and Louise de Savoie, and Book II, The Flight. A character named Agrippa says, lowering his tone, "You will gain friends as powerful as those you will lose."
The text says the gallery of François I., which still exists, though reft of some of its ancient splendour, was of great length, admirably proportioned. The text says Don Alonso Avalos, Marquis del Vasto, was a nephew of the renowned Pescara, and, though barely twenty-one, had already acquired a brilliant military reputation. Bourbon says François has made him leader of a robber-host, and Philibert answers, "I serve Bourbon."
